Lutheran Ethics, 1 – Intro

These are the slides from our Sunday morning class happening right now on Luther’s ethics.  Based on the book by Paul Althaus, we’re investigating the ethical life of a Christian in terms of the Two Kingdoms.  Luther’s understanding of the Two Kingdoms doctrine a unique Lutheran contribution to the Christian discussion and one I think helps to settle a number of what would otherwise be contradictions in the Scriptures.  For instance, what are we to make of Jesus saying we should turn the other cheek, and the apostles Paul and Peter teaching that the government bears the sword?  I’m convinced the Two Kingdoms doctrine helps to resolve this difficulty without resorting to a split in teaching between Jesus and Paul, or something worse.

The first set of slides is available here.  Slides and audio from our time together on Sunday morning will follow in later posts.
