Not jolly St. Nick, not yet

7qt199 stnicholas 7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 199)

So, if you don’t get the joke, I’ll tell you why this is funny.  It won’t be funny then, it will be an explained joke which is about the least funny things on the planet but at least you’ll know why it should have been funny for you.  I laughed out loud when I saw it and my beloved will tell you that’s rare.  I usually laugh “on the inside.”

Saint Nickolaus, Bishop of Myra, was in attendance at the Second Ecumenical Council in Nicea, in 325 A.D.  It was at this council that the teaching about Jesus being both true God and true man was clarified, not created, clarified.  Arius the heretic whose teaching about Jesus was heretical was at some point testifying to the council most famously reduced to the jingle “There was a ‘when’ when he was not.”  None of this is in any doubt.

But the legend goes that at one point Arius was spewing on about something and Jolly Old St. Nick, before he was jolly, got sick of it and punched Arius in the face for his heresy.  I know, I know, it’s not very tolerant but its hard to resist the sheer glee of at least thinking about punching a heretic in the face.

Come, Lord Jesus.  Come.
